A car that will not start: information to give a mechanic

Collect a few safe observations before contacting help. This is an enquiry guide, not a jump-start or electrical repair procedure.

Contact MK Mechanics to confirm current availability and arrangements.

Explain what “will not start” means

Does the engine turn over, is there a click, or is there no obvious response? Have any messages appeared? Describe the observation without assuming that the battery is the cause. Several different faults can produce a non-starting vehicle. If you are unsure of the terminology, plain language is fine: describe what happened when you tried to start it and whether the usual dashboard display appeared.

Add the recent history

Note when the vehicle last started normally, how long it has been parked and whether any recent work was carried out. Mention a previously diagnosed problem or warning and any instruction you were given. Do not make repeated starting attempts just to collect more detail. If there is smoke, a concerning smell or another immediate hazard, prioritise safety and appropriate assistance over completing a checklist.

Describe access and timing

Give the vehicle’s location and explain any car-park, gate or height restriction. If it blocks another vehicle or must be moved by a certain time, say so at the start. Ask whether MK Mechanics can help with that vehicle and location, and what information is required before a visit. Do not publish keys, access codes or personal location details in a public review or social comment.

Confirm the agreed service

Ask whether the arrangement is an assessment, a particular repair, or another type of attendance. Clarify charges and approval for further work. Modern vehicles have manufacturer-specific instructions; follow the handbook and qualified advice rather than a generic online jump-start sequence. For an electric or hybrid vehicle, do not open or work on high-voltage systems. This page makes no diagnosis and does not promise immediate attendance or a particular replacement part.

Frequently asked questions

Does a non-starting car always need a battery?

No cause is established by that symptom alone. Describe what happens and let the mechanic assess the vehicle.

What details help with an initial enquiry?

Give the vehicle details, location, recent history and what you observed when it would not start, without attempting unsafe tests.
